The Andomojo River widens just before it meets the sea. The juncture of river and ocean creates a mangrove estuary where rich plant, fish and animal species flourish.
In the last 50 years, over half of the Guanacaste’s forests were cut down to provide pastureland for cattle grazing. Greening Paraiso aims to restore these lands while establishing establish Conservation Development and Enterprise practices.

Conserve, Create, Teach

In the Guanacaste region, Greening Paraiso is a catalyst and advocate for conserving land and water supplies to ensure a healthy environment and creating businesses to ensure economic vitality. As we do our work, we are creating a model of watershed restoration to benefit communities worldwide.

Our Goals:

  • We will restore the 25,000-acre Andomojo watershed to environmental health by directly or cooperatively transitioning several thousand acres to productive and sustainable forestry, agriculture and land development. In the remaining 20,000+ acres we will work with local farmers, timber companies, builders and officials to establish Conservation Development and Enterprise practices throughout the entire area.

  • We will restore the Andomojo River to a year round flow, improving the health of the underlying aquifer, restoring a key mangrove estuary, and improving forest and habitat health.

  • We will initiate and promote conservation development and socially responsible enterprise to create benefit for the local communities.

  • We will share freely our knowledge so that other endangered watersheds around the region and the world benefit from the “greening” model.

  • We will create the first watershed based Plan Regulador, a regional land use plan that allows for development while considering the health and limits of water supplies as well as other environmental objectives.

Who do we serve:

  • The landowners, farmers, and families of the Guanacaste region who, through a local community matriarch, have called out to “let the river flow again”.

  • The country of Costa Rica with her established and respected policies and practices of conservation and environmental reforestation.

  • Rural Latin America with many endangered watershed ecosystems on the precipice of destruction.

  • Communities and individuals everywhere who are seeking pure water, healthy lands and forests in order to provide food, livelihood, recreation and inspiration.
