El Centro Verde – Sustainable solutions for the next generation

The key outreach and education partner for Greening Paraiso, El Centro Verde has the goal to teach and inspire ecological literacy and sustainable solutions to the next generation of earth stewards.

In 1996 Tom Peifer, a writer and agroecologist from California took on the mission of regenerating a five-acre parcel of land near Paraiso, Costa Rica. In the last decade he has restored this seasonal pasture and spiny jungle thicket to a sustainable farm and agroforestry research facility and demonstration center called El Centro Verde (ECV).

AT ECV, Tom has developed methods and educational programs around managing farms and forests while making the best use of energy, water and other resources. Today, the Center offers individualized college internships, workshops and courses, local outreach and education programs, and conservation development consulting services. ECV is also beginning plans for Pueblo Verde, the “greenest” development in Costa Rica employing land use and water conservation solutions developed here over 10 years.
