Regaining healthy soil, water and prosperity

Only a few decades ago, the Andomojo River flowed abundantly, nourishing field and forest in the Guanacaste region . Now it flows only during the rainy season and disappears into a parched riverbed for six months of the year. Industrial agriculture, cattle ranching, lumber harvesting, booming tourism and second home construction are leaving a heavy footprint on the Guanacaste region.

Can the Andomojo ever flow again amidst productive green forests and farmlands that sustain a local economy? We believe it can. And if the Andomojo can come back, so can countless rivers and watersheds in Central America that are suffering a similar fate.

The Greening Paraiso organization has its roots in the energies and efforts of a diverse group of international ecologists, social entrepreneurs, educators, and students who have begun working to reclaim the Andamojo River watershed.. During that same year, Tom Peifer visited the area, and took on a mission of restoring a tract of pasture lands and jungle into a conservation research facility and creating a model for what could be done in the region. Tom’s work culminated in the El Centro Verde organization.

In the last five years, a group of Costa Rican and U.S. entrepreneurs have launched sustainable development projects while students from the University of Vermont, EARTH University, the National University of Costa Rica and Nyenrode University in Holland and more have gathered in the region to design conservation and sustainable development strategies.

In 2006, we formed Greening Paraiso as a partnership of individuals, colleges, institutions, and businesses organized to restore the entire 25,000-acre watershed, prove the concept of sustainable business in the region, and create a model for the dry tropical forest in Mesoamerica.
