Institute

Teaching the next generation of earth stewards

El Centro Verde Institute – a synthesis of learning opportunities in permaculture, agroforestry and soil/water management techniques for interns, volunteers and visitors.

El Centro Verde is rich in learning opportunities. Based on more than a decade of ongoing research and development, each day’s projects depend on the seasonal conditions and needs.

For example, during the dry growing season, Elias Rodriguez, local community education coordinator, may be planting or harvesting vegetables in the dry-season lakebed surrounded by raised “chinampas” covered with perennial crops.

Or you many find Tom Peifer, ECV founder, propagating vetiver grass or bamboo that will be used in “living gabions” by local developers to prevent erosion at new home sites.

Tom’s son Marley might be planting ojoche—the Mayan bread nut tree—into the understory of the surrounding forest. Whether you are looking for a three-month college internship, a two-week volunteer position or planning a day’s visit to the region, come to El Centro Verde for a unique and transformative educational experience.

Spanish, French and English are spoken fluently at El Centro Verde.
